9 out of 10 companies want Mobile Apps to support their processes

The adoption of solutions on Tablet and Smartphone is growing in order to increase the productivity and to make the internal processes easier. The 51% of companies has just adopted this type of solution, the 40% would like to do it and only the 9% is not interested. The most popular solutions are the operative ones, ones for sales and fieldwork. The integration between apps is low while the integration between IT systems  is high. Read the analysis done by the Mobile Enterprise Observatory of the Politecnico di Milano.

Many companies, in every industry, are starting a Mobile Strategy in order to interact with the market in a new way, to increase productivity and to make dependents work easier. According to the Mobile Enterprise Observatory of Politecnico di Milano, the device and app use for work, by 13 million of Italian mobile workers, has generated a 9 million productivity recovery in 2014. 

One of the three pillars of Mobile Enterprise  defined by the Observatory, as the Mobile Biz App can be divided into three macro-categories:

- “Operative”, developed (or tailored) to support specific business processes: Sales Force Automation, sales processes, marketing, merchandising and promotion, Field Force automation, for other field processes (maintenance, transport etc….); Warehouse & Stock management.

- “Office Practice Automation”, developed (or tailored) to support organizational and administrational processes with specific functionalities like the expense report filling, permission requests, and so on.  

- “Personal Productivity”, developed (or tailored) to visualize dashboard application and reporting, solutions to communicate information to dependents and so on, or to support elementary individual productivity functions (word processors, spreadsheets).

Sales and "Field force automation"  are the most urgent processes to mobilize. The Italians CIOs are increasingly interested in Mobile Biz App introduction to catch mobility benefits. The Observatory has consulted 194 Italian CIOs and IT Managers, and it has noted that 51% of Italian It managers has just implemented apps, plus 35% compared to 2013. Only 9% has not introduced yet apps and are not interested to do it coming soon, while 40% wants to introduce them in the future (for 12% it is a choice already made). This phenomenon is growing but it is not really pervasive: between companies that introduced Mobile Biz Apps, 81% has implemented less than 10 apps (52% only less than 5 ones), and between the remaining 19%, only one third has introduced more than 20 apps.  

The Operative Apps are the most adopted Apps. They registered  the highest degree of use by final users. The Sales Force Automation Apps, already introduced by 37% of CIOS, will be adopted in the next years by 41% of companies. This is the result of the growing phenomenon of Sales App. In second place there are the Field Force Automation Apps, mostly addressed to maintenance technicians, installers, inspectors: they have been already adopted by 25% of companies, while a further 37% will introduce them in the future. Other types of Operative Apps have been already adopted in 23% of cases and they will be introduced in the future in a further 43%.  The Office Practice Automation Apps have been introduced, on the other side, in 22% of analyzed companies, but only the 10% use already them intensively. The 46% of CIOs, in fact, is evaluating their introduction. Finally the Personal Productivity Apps have been already introduced by the 25% of companies and a further 45% will implement them in the future. The use degree however is the lower one (8%), attending that users will understand their potentialities.

Integration between Apps, the problem s the data core sharing. The degree of Mobile Biz App integration . the Observatory analyzed the integration degree between Mobile App and IT Systems (“vertical” integration) and the integration between Apps (“horizontal” integration). In the first case, the 40% of CIOS affirm that the integration between App and IT Systems is “high”, while the 38% “middle high”. The horizontal integration is much lower: in the 75% of cases CIOs rate it “low” or “middle low”.  This depends on technological choices done, since not all Mobile Operative systems let the complete dialog between different Apps on devices, precluding the empty integration between solutions, in terms of data core sharing.  

The decision to introduce Mobile Biz App put the CIO before two important choices: the choice of the development way and the choice of the supplier. First CIOs can choose between  web development, the hybrid one, the native one on single platform or on multiplatform. Then the app development is mostly done by external suppliers. CIOs choose little specialized Software Houses (37%), System Integrators (25%),  big Software Houses (11%), independent developer (11%) and Web Agencies (10%). The internal development is chosen in few situations, mostly when an high degree of customization is required or when people want to internal develop strong Mobile competences.
