What to do to become a 4.0 Company: tips for small and medium-sized businesses

Many tax incentives for the Industry 4.0 investments and for tangible assets and software systems digital transformation projects.

Italian market is facing an important phase of structural change. In Italy there have been many tax for technological investments concerning the Industry 4.0 plan and the digital innovation of machinery and software systems.

These tax incentives produced an increase in capital goods of around 9%. Orders for new machinery, on the other hand, have grown by 10%, and this allows Italy to position itself ahead of Germany in this particular ranking. However, this is only a small part of what could change if the digitization will be integrated and incorporated into a well-designed and consolidated operating model (also called Production System). Most of the potential of Industry 4.0 resides within industries that use digital solutions, rather than in the industries that produce such solutions.

Despite the measures of the government, the reality of many small and medium sized Italian companies is characterized by a traditional and not very innovative industrial operating model. In fact, without a solid program of continuous improvement and the acquisition of adequate capacity to identify and eliminate losses, digitization would turn into a failure, with insufficient results to repay the investments. It is therefore necessary to rely on an organizational model totally supported by digitization. Interconnecting a new machine does not create value in itself; each "element" must be integrated into a factory system to form a sort of intelligent entity capable of using all available data to bring benefits in terms of business efficiency. The interconnection of machines and systems, at all levels, is the basis for achieving success and creating added value for companies.

To cut this important milestone, all workers, from the CEO to the workers, must believe in the improvement project, must support it and participate actively in order for the necessary changes to be introduced into the company.

First of all, however, it is essential to set up a specialized educational activity for its employees, in order to understand theoretical principles and to see the techniques applied live. This training experience must be provided for every professional figure, so that anyone adopts the theoretical and practical skills essential for the correct implementation of the operating model. Digitization must be conceived as a means of enhancing the implementation of a broader operational model that actively involves company personnel. For this reason, therefore, it is good to open up to new technologies, new production systems and new factors that can make working life easier, faster and safer. All this, of course, thanks to the use of the network and new technologies.
